As of June 1, 2014 we have implemented a new policy regarding chronic narcotics and controlled substances prescribed by the physicians and providers at San Diego Sports Medicine and Family Health Center. Each patient requiring chronic narcotics and controlled substances will be required to sign a contract which will further clarify the rules and requirements of receiving these medications. The patient will be required to sign the contract, designate a specific pharmacy that will be used, and make regularly scheduled visits in the office to obtain appropriate amounts of these medications.
We are required by the Medical Board of California to perform regular evaluations in the office on all patients using these controlled substances. We will no longer be able to provide any refills by phone or on evening and weekend calls. This policy is consistent with the American Academy of Family Physicians best practice guidelines. We also believe this policy will better enable us to provide excellent and safe clinical care to our patients.
